Chain Bridge will soon be reopened after eighteen months: on Wednesday, November 9th, the asphalting of the crossing was completed, BKK announced on Wednesday. As it was written, among the construction tasks affecting the roadway, the construction of the coating system for the edge and the painting of road markings remain. The test load of the Chain Bridge will take place on Saturday, November 12th, when the quay section between Halász street and Döbrentei square will be temporarily closed to road traffic.
On Wednesday, November 9th, the contractor’s specialists completed the asphalting of the Chain Bridge. In just one day, the rolled asphalt, which is the so-called wear layer, was placed on the road between the bridge heads, which covers an area of approximately 2,400 square meters. After that, the cast asphalt strips covering the edges and the coating system of the edges will be formed, as well as the road markings will be painted. This means that the entire 18-month closure of the Chain Bridge is coming to an end. Traffic will return to the bridge track in mid-December, but the experts will continue to work on the sidewalks and underpasses next year. In the coming weeks, work will continue on the connecting parts, for example, the restoration of Clark Ádám square and the reconstruction of the original, large roundabout will begin.
The new steel road, replacing the old reinforced concrete road structure, was completed in record time in July this year, barely a year after the complete closure. By September, the insulation of the new roadway and the asphalt layer protecting the insulation were completed in the side openings of the bridge, and the installation of the new dilatations began (these structures cover the expansion gaps on the bridge and allow the bridge to change shape while bearing the traffic load). By the time the beautified Buda lions returned to their place in mid-October, the specialists had already insulated the entire roadway and covered it with poured asphalt, and the expansion structures had been installed in place.
The renovation of the Chain Bridge continues according to the schedule: on Saturday, November 12th, there will be a trial load of the crossing, in which 24 20-ton trucks will participate; for the duration of the test load, the quay section between Halász street and Döbrentei square will be temporarily closed to road traffic; in the weeks following the test load, the contractor’s specialists dismantle the temporary scaffolding of the pylons from the completed roadway, in addition to, for example, continuing the construction of public lighting and starting to install the new candelabra. According to the plans, the construction will continue until the fall of 2023 with, among other things, the renovation of the sidewalks and the reconstruction of the historical elements, so the affected areas will still be cordoned off and form part of the work area.
