Until this December, half as many checks have been made, one and a half times as many cases of offences have been detected by the customs and excise guards on the Northern Great Plain as in 2010.
The total sum of the fines imposed by them is 2.5 billion HUF which will probably increase to 3 billion HUF (twice as much as last year) by the end of the year. Gábor Mez?, director of the Northern Plain Regional Directorate of the Hungarian Customs and Finance Guard said that as the tax on tobacco would increase, smuggling would also do so next year. The authorities are preparing for this by developing new technologies and training 110-120 new customs and finance guards.
