Due to tectonic movements, certain areas of the country has sunk 15-16 cm over the last 30-40 years. Debrecen and its surroundings, too.

Tectonic movements, that is the rise and fall of the earth’s crust can be observed in Hungary as well. This can be the reason why the northern side of hills in the north has risen in the past 35 years while the Great Plains has sunk, in some areas by over 10 cm. Some regions in the north side of the Great Plains lay 9-10 cm lower than they did in the 1970’s.
