Opposition Socialist lawmaker Ildikó Borbély Bangó called for an increase in family support on Thursday, saying that some of the benefits had not changed for 13 years.
She told an online press conference that it was a lie that bringing forward January payments to December helped families. “It only means that families will not get support for more than a month,” she said. Bangó said that having children still represented “one of the greatest financial risks” in Hungary. The risk of ending up in poverty and social exclusion is especially high among single parents, with 28.2% of them living in poverty last year as against 21.6% in 2018, she added. She also called for expanding the group of people eligible for the government’s family home purchase subsidies (csok).
